Preview: Romsey vs New Milton

Writer: Jamie TarrantJamie Tarrant

New Milton Town are on the road again this weekend as they travel to face Romsey Town in a crucial Wessex League Division One clash. Sitting proudly at the top of the table and six points clear of their nearest rivals, New Milton are edging closer to their target of promotion, with just 10 games left in their impressive campaign.

Spirits are sky-high in the New Milton camp following a superb away victory on the Isle of Wight last weekend, a result that has galvanised the whole club. Meanwhile, hosts Romsey Town are enduring a difficult period, struggling for form and desperate to turn their fortunes around. With momentum firmly on their side, New Milton will look to capitalise and take another significant step towards achieving their goals.

Matt Maybury said the following ahead of tomorrow's fixture.

"We know how tough this game will be, nobody goes to Romsey and has an easy ride.
We watched them on Tuesday night and know how hard they work and that they’re very high quality. If we want to get a result, we’ll need to match their work rate and be on it from the start.
The mood amongst the lads is second to none, and they’ve built some really good momentum, so we need to take that into this weekend.
We know there are still plenty of twists and turns to come, so we’ll be taking it game by game, and that starts on Saturday."

The game was originally scheduled to take place on December 7th but was postponed due to the events of Storm Darragh. The weather forecast ahead of tomorrow does not look promising and a pitch inspection is likely early on Saturday morning.

The Brickmakers come into the game on the back of a 4-2 win away at East Cowes Victoria last weekend, while Romsey Town were defeated away at Ash United in the week and have won just twice in their last ten Wessex League fixtures. Matt Maybury's team, on the other hand, have won eight of their last ten as they continue their club-record unbeaten league run, which now stands at 21 games.

HEAD TO HEAD - NEW MILTON VS ROMSEY

Since records began in 2007, New Milton and Romsey have met 36 times, with Romsey having the better record. They have 19 wins, while New Milton has 12, with five draws along the way. Matt Maybury will be hoping to increase his side's win number tomorrow.

The sides last met earlier this season, back in August. 157 spectators watched the Brickmakers triumph in a 5-3 thriller at the M.A. Hart Stadium. Barney Stone struck two goals, with Brad Snelling, Cam Smith, and Cam McMonagle also finding the net.
